Food Porn

It’s been an interesting  1 1/2 weeks since my oral surgery. I learned that anything not room temperature would cause me severe pain. Anything salty or acidic would also cause me pain. The first week, the pharmacy lost one of my prescriptions.  After I found out about the missing drugs and got them, I was in a lot less pain.

Oral surgery means you can’t eat all the things you might normally enjoy. It will be awhile before I’m able to have crunchy things like chips, or super chewy things like overcooked calamari (but really, who likes overcooked calamari anyway?). I’m just barely getting into soft solids and very cold foods, like ice cream.

Yesterday, I watched my partner eat a couple of very salty hash brown patties he prepared straight from the freezer to toaster oven. I looked longingly at them, remembering how that light crispness felt on my teeth and the warm, salty potato insides would make my tongue water.

In the mean time, I was thinking how I would love to watch a TV program in which people just eat and deeply, truly enjoy their food. I appreciate food so much more when others do.

Food Network has such a show. It’s called “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” It doesn’t matter if I don’t like what they are eating, I just enjoy watching them describe, prepare, and consume that stuff.

Watch Alton Brown describe Deep Fried Black-Eyed Peas above. I’ve never had them, but they sound amazing…the only thing missing from this little clip is Alton actually taking a spoonful and putting it in his mouth, his eyes closing, and a deep moan reverberating in his throat.
